Turkey-Pakistan Relations, 21.1.2019
Turkey considers the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, with which it is bound with fraternal ties, as one of the prominent players for the security and stability of the region.
Turkey-Pakistan relations gain their strength from history. The support extended by the Muslims of the sub-continent to the Turkish Independence War occupies a special place in the Turkish mind. The Turkish Liberation War and its success in establishing a modern state afterwards has been a source of inspiration for the Pakistani people since August 14, 1947, the day the Islamic Republic of Pakistan emerged as a sovereign state.
Following the establishment of Pakistan, both countries extended each other their support during the most difficult times, such as in reacting natural disasters and they cemented their friendly relations with frequent high-level visits. The High Level Cooperation Council which was established in 2009 and upgraded to High Level Strategic Cooperation Council has been a clear demonstration both countries’ will to further bilateral relations in every field. Fifth meeting of the High Level Strategic Cooperation Council was held in Ankara on 23 February 2017 under the chair of both countries’ Prime Ministers. Within this mechanism, 60 agreements and documents have been signed, so far.
The positive reflection of the excellent bilateral relations can also be seen in the international fora. Turkey and Pakistan are supporting each other in all international platforms.
Frequent high-level visits are a clear indicator of the close political relations between Turkey and Pakistan. H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey paid an official visit to Pakistan on 16-17 November 2016. H.E. President Erdoğan visited Pakistan in order to participate in Economic Cooperation Organization Summit, which was hold in Islamabad, on 28 February - 1 March 2017. H.E. Mamnoon Hussain, former President of Pakistan attended to the inauguration ceremony of H.E. President Erdoğan on 9 July 2018. Furthermore, H.E. Dr. Arif Alvi, President of Pakistan attended the inauguration of Istanbul Airport on 29 October 2018.
H.E. Imran Khan, Prime Minister of Pakistan paid an official visit to Turkey on 3-4 January 2019. The Prime Minister who was accompanied by a high-level delegation on the occasion, called on H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Turkey. Within the margins of the visit, H.E. Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu met his Pakistani counterpart H.E. Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi separately.
H.E. Mevlüt Cavusoglu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey, visited Pakistan in 13-14 September 2018. On this occasion, H.E. Cavusoglu called on H.E. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, then Prime Minister of Pakistan and met General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army.
The first trilateral meeting of the Turkey-Azerbaijan-Pakistan Ministers of Foreign Affairs was held in Baku, on 30 November 2017.
